Safety Audit Report of Gurgaon

Safetipin has been conducting safety audits of Gurgaon since August 2013 and a total of 7767 audits have been done. Safetipin is a mobile app that collects safety data from various cities around the world and shares this data with governmental and non-governmental agencies to create change and impact. The data studies the infrastructure and social usage of space in the city and how it impacts the safety of citizens. The overall Safety Score of Gurgaon is 1.8/5 i.e. Average. The Old Gurgaon area is found to be more unsafe than the New Gurgaon. Of the nine parameters, Light, Visibility, Security and Public Transport have been rated the poorest. Nairobi Safety Audit Report

Introduction Safetipin, in partnership with the Nairobi City County, conducted safety audits in city of Nairobi supported by UN Habitat and Cities Alliance.SafetiPin, is a map-based mobile phone and online application, which works to make communities and cities safer by providing safetyrelated information collected by users and by trained auditors. At the core of the app is the Women’s Safety Audit. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety in public spaces. The audit is based on nine parameters – Lighting, Openness, Visibility, Crowd, Security, Walkpath, Availability of Public Transport, Gender Diversity and Feeling. Methodology The safety audits have been generated using two methods. First, manual audits were conducted by volunteers using the My Safetipin app at night. A total of 5,319 manual audits were conducted. Secondly, safety audits have been generated using the Safetipin Nite app. Uber taxis and local taxis of Nairobi were hired for this purpose. Mobile phones were mounted on the windshield and using the app photographs of the city roads were taken. These photographs were then assessed based on the nine audit parameters to generate audit pins at each location. A total of 13,062 audit pins have been generated over 744 kms of road length.   Safety Score The Safety Score of a point is a reflection of the perception of safety at that particular location. For each audit point it is a number between 0 and 5, 0 being Poor/Very Unsafe and 5 being Excellent i.e. extremely safe.The overall Safety Score for city of Nairobi is 3/5. Many locations have been rated as extremely safe and overall the city offers average sense of safety to women at night. At the core of the app is the Women’s Safety Audit. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety inpublic spaces. The audit is based on nine parameters – Lighting, Openness, Visibility, Crowd, Security, Walk path, Availability of Public Transport, Gender Diversity, and Feeling. The audits were conducted by an architect from NDMC along with Safetipin team. The assessmentwas done post sunset till 9 pm. Lok Kalyan (previously known as Race Course) is an underground metro station on Delhi Metro’s yellow line. Located in Lutyens Delhi. it is surrounded by residences of the country’s senior administration officials. An area of approximately 500m radius around the metro station has been studied and 119 audit pins have been generated. The area outside the metro entry/exit and the bus stop were studied. Safety Audits indicate that the area around the metro station is safe. When compared to main roads, audit points within the neighborhood have been rated lower in terms of safety score. Due to the absence of paratransit facility at the neighborhood level, Public Transport has been rated Average. Due to regular patrolling, Security is rated Average as well. The parameter of Lighting and Walkpath has been rated Good. With high boundary walls and few street vendors, Visibility has been rated Poor. The audits were conducted by an architect from NDMC along with Safetipin team. The assessment was done post sunset till 9 pm. Mandi House is an underground metro station that provides a same-level interchange between the two lines of Delhi Metro namely Blue line and Violet line. This area serves as the cultural hub of Delhi as it is home to the country’s finest cultural institutions like National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Academy, Sahitya Academy among others. An area of approximately 500m radius around the metro station has been studied and 40 audit pins have been generated. The area outside the metro entry/exit and the bus stop were studied. Safety Audits indicate that the area around the metro station is safe. The safety score is rated lower at a few spots near the flyover on Sikandar Road. Walkpath parameter has been rated the highest i.e. Good. The parameter of Lighting and Public Transport has been rated Above Average.   Visibility has been rated Below Average due to high boundary walls of buildings. A Safety Analysis of the Patel Chowk Metro Station

At the core of the app is the Women’s Safety Audit. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety inpublic spaces. The audits were conducted by female architects from NDMC along with Safetipin team. The assessment was done post sunset till 9 pm. Patel Chowk is an underground metro station on Delhi Metro’s Yellow line. It is surrounded by various government offices like Jeevan Tara, Dak Bhawan, Sanchar Bhawan, Yojana Bhawan etc. Additionally, it caters to tourists visiting Jantar Mantar, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, and National Philatelic Museum. An area of approximately 500m radius around the metro station has been studied and 113 audit pins have been generated. The area outside the metro entry/exit and the bus stop were studied. Safety Audits indicate that the area around the metro station is safe. Due to lack of activity and pedestrians, the lane behind Akashwani Bhawan has been rated lower in terms of safety. The parameters of Lightingand Walkpath has been rated Good. Public Transport parameter is rated Above Average. The number of pedestrians decreases after office hours. Therefore, People and Gender Usage parameters have been rated Below Average and Poor respectively. Visibility and Security parameters have been rated Below Average as well. Overall, auditors have rated the Feeling in this area as Average. Lighting Lighting Parameter has been rated 2.5/3 i.e. Good. Throughout this audit area, streetlights are installed along the edge of footpath facing the road. The illumination is bright on the vehicular carriageway but low on pedestrians path. Additional street lights are needed along the footpath to ensure uniform illumination. Care should be taken while installing streetlights in midst of trees along the footpath. Some streetlights were found to be hidden behind trees’ foliage, resulting in low illumination. Regular maintenance checks should be carried out to prune tree leaves in this area. At the core of the app is the Women’s Safety Audit. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety inpublic spaces. The audit is based on nine parameters – Lighting, Openness, Visibility, Crowd, Security, Walk path, Availability of Public Transport, Gender Diversity, and Feeling. The audits were conducted by an architect from NDMC along with Safetipin team. The assessment was done post sunset till 9 pm.   RK Ashram Marg is an overhead metro station on Delhi Metro’s Blue line. It is named after Ramakrishna Mission’s spiritual center situated on Panchkuian Road. The area is known for two major markets namely Paharganj Market and furniture market along Panchkuian Marg. On the southern side of the metro station i.e. along RK Ashram Marg, there are government housing societies. An area of approximately 500m radius around the metro station has been studied and 70 audit pins have been generated. The area outside the metro entry/exit and the bus stop were studied. Safety Audits indicate that the area around the metro station is safe. Safety score was found to be good throughout the audit area. Lighting parameter has been rated Good i.e. the highest followed by Walkpath and Public Transport (Above Average). The parameter of Security has been rated Below Average. Visibility has been rated Average owing to popular commercial market surrounding the metro station. The parameter of People and Gender have been rated Average and Below Average respectively. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety inpublic spaces.  The audit is based on nine parameters – Lighting, Openness, Visibility, Crowd, Security, Walk path, Availability of Public Transport, Gender Diversity, and Feeling. The audits were conducted by an architect from NDMC along with Safetipin team. The assessment was done post sunset till 9 pm. Khan Market is an underground metro station on Delhi Metro’s Violet line. The metro station is situated near one of the costliest and busiest retail markets i.e. Khan Market. It is surrounded by hotels and residences. An area of approximately 500m radius around the metro station has been studied and 164 audit pins have been generated. The area outside the metro entry/exit and the bus stop were studied. Public Transport in this area has been rated Average. The parameter of the People and Gender have been rated Below Average and Poor respectively. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety inpublic spaces.  The audit is based on nine parameters – Lighting, Openness, Visibility, Crowd, Security, Walk path, Availability of Public Transport, Gender Diversity, and Feeling. The audits were conducted by Safetipin team. The assessment was done post sunset till 9 pm. Jhandewalan is an overhead metro station on Delhi Metro’s Blue line. This area is known for Hanuman temple and Mata Jhandewali temple after which the metro station is named. While there is the ridge on one side, there is a mixed use development on the other side of the station. It has offices, commercial complex and residences. An area of approximately 500m radius around the metro station has been studied and 83 audit pins have been generated. The area outside the metro entry/exit and the bus stop were studied. Safety Audits indicate that the area around the metro station is safe. The area fares well in terms of safety score. The parameters of Lighting, Walkpath and Public Transport have been rated Above Average. After office hours, Security and Visibility parameters have been rated Below Average. Though there are people on the streets after dark in this area, women and children are less in number. While the parameter of People has been rated Average, Gender Usage has been rated Poor. A Safety Analysis Of the Jor Bagh Metro Station

At the core of the app is the Women’s Safety Audit. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety in public spaces. The The audit is based on nine parameters – Lighting, Openness, Visibility, Crowd, Security, Walk path, Availability of Public Transport, Gender Diversity, and Feeling. The audits were conducted along with female architects from NDMC. The assessment was done post sunset till 10 pm. An area of approximately 500m around the metro station was audited and a total of 129 audit pins have been generated.   The Jor Bagh metro station is part of the Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line and is located along the arterial road Aurobindo Marg catering to Lodhi Colony and Jor Bagh area comprising high-end bungalows, government offices and staff quarters, and various institutes like the Indian Habitat Centre, India International Centre, Alliance Francaise etc. The Lodi Garden and Safdarjung tomb are also strong attractions pulling people and tourists in this area. The user group is thus diverse ranging from daily office goers and residents to frequent visitors and occasional tourists. Safety Audits indicate that the area around the Jor Average Audit Parameters (on a scale of 3) Bagh metro station offers average levels of safety for women at night. The parameters of Lighting, Openness and Walkpath have been rated Above Average. Public Transport and Feeling parameters have been rated Average. Visibility, Security, Crowd, and Gender diversity have been rated as Below Average for this area. While there are people including women in the residential areas, the main roads tend to be secluded post office hours. However, most of the area was found to be lit and having good footpaths. The wide roads with buildings having setbacks account for the good rating for Openness parameter. A Safety Analysis of the Barakhamba Road Metro Station

This Report has been prepared as part of the Project being undertaken with NDMC to Enhance the Last Mile Connectivity along the metro stations within its jurisdiction. The safety audits were conducted by Smt. Nutan, an architect from NDMC along with Safetipin team. At the core of the app is the Women’s Safety Audit. A Women’s Safety Audit (WSA) is a participatory tool for collecting and assessing information about perceptions of urban safety in public spaces. The the audit is based on nine parameters – Lighting, Openness, Visibility, Crowd, Security, Walk path, Availability of Public Transport, Gender Diversity, and Feeling. The audits were conducted along with female architects from NDMC. The assessment was done post sunset till 10 pm. An area of approximately 500m around the metro station was audited and a total of 44 audit pins have been generated. Barakhamba Road is an extension of central Delhi’s Connaught Place. The stretch can be divided into two halves. The first half is a commercial stretch comprising mainly offices and some coaching centers. This stretch sees some activity even in the evening hours. This stretch was re-developed and transformed when the metro station was constructed. The second stretch towards Mandi House has few Embassies and residences and the reputed Modern School. The stretch is active during the day till the school is operational but in the evening there is no activity here. Safety Audits indicate that the area around the Barakhamba Road metro station offers an average amount of safety to women at night. The Walkpath parameter has been rated Good. Lighting has been rated Above Average. The parameters of Openness, Public Transport, and Feeling have been rated Average. Visibility, Crowd, and Security parameters have been rated Below Average. Gender Usage has been rated, Poor. Since the area primarily has offices which close in the evening, few people are seen out of which very few are women. In the bungalow zone and along Modern School there is no activity in the evening hours and the stretch is predominantly secluded.
